So I Just Watched… The Avengers: Age Of Ultron (Marvel Studios, 2015)
Just hours before the north-american release I finally got to see “Avengers: Age Of Ultron” and let me tell you right now what you can dismiss before watching the film: every damn critic saying this new entry in the Avengers saga is dark or dull. That’s why I hate professional reviews and have better regard of well worded opinions of a casual viewer over “professional critics” any day of the week. Anyway, on we go!
The team is back together dismantling what’s left of Hydra and looking to get back Loki’s scepter from the first film, as you can see in the opening sequence, the six main Avengers are no longer a struggling unit. They are a team of professionals and they make quick work of the Hydra facility, but not before Tony Stark gets a glimpse of a grim future by The Scarlet Witch. As a result Tony wants to make “a suit of armor around the world” by putting together an A.I who will run all the defenses of the world. And thus Ultron is born.
As Marvel films goes this one doesn’t waste a single minute of your time and Joss Whedon again manages to give every character his time in the sun. previously under developed characters like the Black Widow, Hawkeye and Bruce Banner gets a lot more of screen time and a lot of character development. the build up to the Banner/Romanoff relationship is a delight to watch. Robert Downey Jr. is flawless as Iron Man and although there is still a major gripe among comic fans because he’s the one to create Ultron instead of Hank Pym, believe me when I tell you that It works beautifully, Chris Evan and Chris Hemstworth both look very comfortable in their roles and last but not least is James Spader as Ultron.
As much as RDJ puts of his real self in Tony Stark, James Spader does the same with Ultron, he makes this character his own just by being mostly James Spader and he totally pulls it off. He was born to play that role and it’s a damn shame we don’t get to see his face, because his voice acting is flawless. The story of the twins is a little shady (unless you’ve read the prequel comic that explains where they are coming from) and Scarlet Witch gets a lot more to do than his brother Quicksilver. The Vision is the great surprise on the film I won’t spoil his arc in here. I will just say that it’s totally worth the mystery surrounding the character.
Marvel characteristic traits in the comics are present all over this movie and that’s what make it great: the ongoing antagonism of the heroes among themselves, the unraveling plot of a villain that’s too smart for his own good, the merry Marvel tradition of “The old order changet” with a new line-up of the team at the end of this adventure, a great score, an even more awesome script, some of the best CGI I have ever seen to this day, it’s all topped with the best Stan Lee cameo in all his Marvel films so far! All in all this is another home run outta the park from Marvel Studios (at least for me!). Stick to the mid credits to see how phase III stars!
