kingcheddarxvii:

I’m of the belief that if you have a large following of young people online, it’s irresponsible to make posts or draw comics where the punchline is “I’m trash” or any message of self-loathing. But at the same time I know it’s important for people to vent so if you really gotta let it out then it’s better you’re doing that in a creative way. It is important for people to feel solidarity. But, personally, I think it does more harm than good, because the language of such posts is never really focused on learning to overcome those kinds of feelings. They’re just jokes about hating oneself, usually, not messages of solidarity with any message of hope. So even if you’re making a joke, please take a send and ask yourself what kind of effect it could have, how many young people will see it, relate to it, and in that small way receive affirmation for viewing themselves as garbage

there’s a big difference between repping positivity and implying artists who are honest about hating themselves in their work or joke about it as a means of catharsis are irresponsible. that’s a really weird way of skating around the idea of policing how people deal with mental illness in art. like..
