So I Read Today… Punisher Vs Daredevil (2000)

The second season of Daredevil is out right now so I took the time to read some of the older stuff to know how these two characters meet and found this little gem here. This one-shot reprints Daredevil #183, 184 and 257 of the first volume. both stories show that while these guys follow the same path regarding justice they both believe in opposing ways to achieve it and while the Punisher methods are questionable Daredevil’s are very unorthodox.

Frank Miller, Klaus Janson, Ann Nocenti and John Romita Jr. are the talents who chronicle these tales from the streets of Hell’s Kitchen. In the first one we have Matt defending a kid  who’s trying really hard to get vengeance for his deceased sister who committed suicide while on a drug induced rampage. Manipulation and double crosses pave the way for Matt to clash with Frank for the very first time. Since The Punisher knows Matt’s a good guy he lets him slide while Matt’s not about to give him the same courtesy since he knows Frank is psychotic. In the end the defining traits of their relationship is laid out for the reader to see how Frank can live with an easy conciencie over his acts while Matt sometimes suffers for doing what is right.

In the second tale we get to see how industrial advances renders the handy work of a man obsolete making him lose his job for his inability to catch up with times, thus driving the guy to the edge by pointing fingers at everyone and star poisoning people, he’s found rather quickly by both vigilantes and of course they square off against each other to bring him to justice. As the offender comes to realize that this wicked spectacle he’s witnessing is over his right to survive he tries to make his way out of it the hard way. The end of it might surprise you.

Two tales, great story and great art by classic creators, this one is out there for a song and I highly recommend it. If nothing else, you’ll get to know why these guys seem to love to hate each other.
