So I Just Watched… Captain America: Civil War (Marvel Studios // 2016)

This year has proven to be very good for Superhero films so far dropping three major motion pictures within only four months in the year and with three more to go, it’s a though call to say that we have seen the best of what the year has to offer so far. Unfortunately for the remaining upcoming films, Marvel Studio’s lattes effort just upped the bar to huge levels. Let’s get the obvious out of the way first: The only thing this movie has in common with the comic storyline is the name and that’s it. At his core Captain America: Civil War, which was made out to be “Avengers 2.5″ by every media before it even hit theaters is a solid Cap story.

Following the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age Of Ultron, the current line-up of the team embarks on a mission to stop Rumlow (now Crossbones, but never refereed as such in the film) from stealing a bio-weapon in Nigeria. The mission goes sour when they manage to stop the theft but fail to safeguard the civilians and an humanitarian mission of Wankandans. As people dies, the world cannot turn a blind eye on the lack of supervision on super powered beings anymore so “The Sokovian Accords” are put in effect by 117 nations, making The Avengers a government sponsored organization… with Tony Stark’s blessing.

This of course does not bode well with Steve who’s torn between a rock and a hard place until one of the remaining strings of his past is gone. When the signature of the accords are about to become official a terrorist attack occurs killing thousands and taking out T’chaka the king of Wakanda. When the smoke clears there’s just one responsible: The Winter Soldier. While the world is given the face of his villain Steve is the only one who have the back of his friend splitting the team in two: Those who want to contain and protect and those who want to enforce the law by any means necessary and leaving each side to collect the numbers to make themselves strong in the upcoming conflict

The film is a very strong offering and very good way to begin Phase 3 for Marvel Studios it manages to balance the endless array of characters and offers their time to shine to everyone. Marvel did a great job keeping Spider-Man under wraps until the release of the film and as reported by multiple outlets he’s onboard with Tony’s side and at full capacity from the get go, Black Panther’s political involvements make so much sense and it doesn’t feel neither forced nor rushed. At the end of the film we have a major player introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The only dark spot? Lack of ramifications. The film keeps it safe by not killing anybody but making it clear that the personal relations of these characters just have changed for good. How will this play out? I guess well just have to wait and see until they get together again in remaining 8 films of phase 3. Go and make this one a hit people. It’s really good!
