So I Read Today… New X-Men #114
Back in 2001 Joe Quesada was handled the keys to Marvel Comics, his first mission of order was to make The X-Men and interesting read again and he did so by recruiting comic’s most crazy idea-man: Grant Morrison, he started his epic run with a bang with the three parter “E is For Extinction” the ideas of the writer were so wild that the book, previously called simply “X-Men” was re-tittled "New X-Men". After some heavy discrepancies of the writer with the editorial house, this set of tales was almost written out of continuity, controversy followed but steady heads prevailed and the works of Grant are still in continuity as the recent Uncanny X-Men #534.1 let us know.
Back to the tale that occupies us, this book introduces Cassandra Nova, Professor X’s twin sister, which has to be the most vicious villain the mutants had ever encountered, in the spam of 3 issues she wiped out Genosha, allegedly killed Magneto and fought with the team toe to toe, almost killing Wolverine, making Cyclops a defenseless infant and switching bodies with Professor X which of course sets up the book for a wild ride for almost one year and a half.
Grant Morrison gave the mutants a much needed shot in the arm in time when the publisher changed their minds about playing it safe, The X-Men stopped being a super-hero book, it was a sci-fi soap opera about the antics of a species trying to survive, the talents of Frank Quitely, Igor Kordey, Phil Jimenez, Ethan Van Schiver and Marc Silvestri made sure you kept coming back for more, this book was the beginning of it and the basis for the current status quo of the mutants were laid in these pages (SPOILER: Grant Morrison is responsible for the Death Of Jean Grey and for making it stick more than ten years now and for Scott and Emma as a couple!)
