American readers may be bemused by the free gifts often given away
with British weekly comics, seeing as it's not something done too often
with U.S. mags, but it was once the custom for U.K. comics to offer an
'inducement' for the first three issues of any new periodical. These could
take the form of a novelty item, like squirt rings, plastic biscuits, luminous
masks, and even, on occasion, confectionery. Such was the case with
JET #1, which lasted 22 issues - probably longer than the free fruit'
bars, which took several months to munch through. Honest -
they were as tough as old boots!
