The Inhumans Trailer // a series by ABC/Marvel Studios (2017)
Let me get this out of the way first: I don’t review an unfinished product ever. I haven’t done so since I reached this understanding that for me to judge anything I have to watch whatever a movie, a comic or even a music album can offer in their entirety. I mean… It’s only fair I do so because actual people put their sweat, blood and tears into producing something for our enjoyment. But when something like ”Inhumans” comes along… Well I just disregarded my own beliefs. Because here we have a preview of something supposed to excite me and peak my interest into characters that Marvel has LITERALLY been shoving down my throat for the past 5 years. They not only want The Inhumans to be relevant they NEED IT SO. They are in the uncanny position of making them a powerhouse on par with the X-Men because… well because they don’t own the film rights for the mutants. That being said… I’m gonna speak my mind for a little while here. Because as generic-looking things go, this show is getting at it by leaps and bounds.
First of all getting The Inhumans right is not exactly tricky if you have the money and the disposition for it and certainly Marvel Studios and ABC has at least the money part covered, but it doesn’t show At ALL. The Inhumans doesn’t have a very convoluted continuity, since their debut in 1963. Not counting their appearances in the Fantastic Four book the group have to this day a countdown of 200+ issues published at best. In the first seconds of the trailer we get a bunch of no name actors pared with Iwan Rheon who’s basically playing a toned down Ramsay Bolton instead of the uber-manipulative Maximus. We don’t get to see Medusa doing anything but being submissive (this woman is not only massively powerful, she’s second in command of a Kingdom and she speaks for Black Bolt dammit!) Black Bolt himself has been depowered to levels that make me mad beyond belief, the mere grunt he did in the trailer would have obliterated all the buildings in the street. Lockjack is an adorable pup and it’s about the only thing I could salvage of the trailer… until I remembered that Lockjack is usually more cool and contemplative (depending on who’s writing him). Then we have the Inhumans themselves… they all look very human to me and if something the comic has done right as the years has gone by is showing us that The Inhumans are really different and not humanoid at all. These guys are truly freaks that take pride in their freakiness. Last but not least it’s the scenery: Attilan looks exactly like any “exotic” location in NYC… I mean come on, they almost have Ikea furniture laying around in Black Bolt and Medusa’s quarters.
I was one of the few who cringed when they downsized The Inhumans from major budget film to TV series; the first news of the casting gave me a little hope, but right now… I fear for the worst. If the series turns out to be any good I’ll be the first to swallow my own words, but so far as I said this show has written “generic” all over it and that’s a damn shame!
